This stoneware vase was born out of my need to throw something large one day. I struggled for a while to get the shape I liked from the 13 pound lump of clay and ultimately decided that it was too tall. After bringing the vase down several inches and softly flaring the lip (an exaggerated form of my favorite mug shapes), she came to life in our Gorham pottery. A set of handles and roughly three hours of carving later, she had personality.
She’s large. I imagine her holding an abundance of lilac blooms in the spring or some maple branches in the fall. Even empty, the electric indigo interior is a shocking, joyful addition to the piece.
The background, like all my favorite sgraffito work, has been completely carved away. The texture is softened by the clear glaze.
